Martin J Tobin

Martin J Tobin MD went to medical school at University College Dublin, Ireland (1969-75).  He completed a medical residency in Dublin, and undertook fellowship training at King’s College Hospital London, University of Miami, and University of Pittsburgh.

Since 1990, he has served as professor of medicine at Hines VA Hospital and Loyola University Medical School in Chicago.

Dr. Tobin has published original research on mechanical ventilation, control of breathing, respiratory muscle function, and other topics.

Between 1999 and 2004, Dr. Tobin served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Tobin is Editor of Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation, published in three editions (1994, 2006, 2012).

In 2021, Dr. Tobin served as expert witness for the prosecution defining the precise mechanism of death of Mr. George Floyd at the trial of Police Officer Derek Chauvin.
