SJS is professor of anesthesiology and intensive care and the deputy clinical director of the Department of anesthesiology and operative intensive care medicine (CVK,CCM) at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. His research focus is skeletal muscle including VIDD, early rehabilitation and PICS in critically ill patients, as well as prehabilitation and frailty. He was the NEXT chair at the ESICM from 2019-2022 and is currently member of the research committee of ESICM as well as ICM Editor.
